The Responder

Reflective · thoughtful · quick to hear

In GRACE, the communication framework in INVEST Marriage, the Responder is reflective and internal, slow to speak and quick to hear.

“Let me sit with that and come back to you. I don't want to answer before I've really thought it through.”

How a Responder sounds, from INVEST Marriage by Bill & Stephanie Lammers.

The Responder at their best

Thoughtful, measured, rarely says something they regret. Brings wisdom because they've thought it through. A steadying presence in conflict.

Blind spots

Silence can be misread as disinterest or stonewalling. May take so long to process that the other feels left hanging.

Under stress

Goes internal and quiet. Needs to withdraw to think, which can look like shutting down.

What drains a Responder

Being pushed for an immediate answer.

What a Responder most needs to hear

“Take your time. I'm not going anywhere.”

How to talk with a Responder

  • Give them time to think.
  • Don't fill the silence or push for an immediate answer.
  • Ask your question, then let them come back to you.
  • Get to the point: a short, clear ask, bullet points over a paragraph.

What it looks like

Asked a big question at dinner, the Responder says almost nothing, then sends a thoughtful text the next morning. The silence was the thinking.

The Responder in a marriage

When two Responders marry. Two Responders give great space but can leave things unresolved in the silence. Set a time to come back to it.

Are you a Responder? Is your spouse?

The INVEST Marriage Snapshot is free. Each of you takes it on your own phone, and when you both have, you see what your two styles make together.
