GRACE: five ways married people communicate
GRACE is the communication framework in INVEST Marriage, by Bill and Stephanie Lammers of Wildfire Leadership. It names five styles, Guardian, Responder, Advocate, Connector and Encourager, so each spouse can understand how they communicate, how the person they married does, and how to say things so they land.
The five GRACE styles
Everyone uses all five at times. Most people lead with one, and a second sits close behind it. None is better: each has a way of being at its best, a blind spot, and a sentence it most needs to hear.

Why your styles matter in a marriage
Two people can say the same words and be heard in different ways. A Guardian needs to feel safe before opening up. A Responder needs time to think. An Advocate trusts plain words. A Connector needs to feel close before solving anything. An Encourager keeps the peace and can leave the hard thing unsaid. Knowing your own style, and the one you married, turns "why do we keep having this argument?" into "this is how you hear me, and how I hear you."
GRACE gives a couple a shared vocabulary for that: what each of you needs to hear, what drains you, and how to bring up something hard so it is received the way you meant it.
Your two styles, together
Five styles make fifteen pairings: ten where you lead differently and five where you lead the same way. Each one has things it does naturally well, and things to watch for.
Warmth Meets Wisdom. One of you keeps hope in the room, the other thinks before speaking. Together, honesty gets said kindly and heard fully.
Heart Meets Honesty. One of you leads with feeling, the other with truth. Together, that's a balance most couples spend years trying to find.
