Intrigue

Discovering the fascination that already draws you together

This session will guide you to notice, on purpose, the curiosity and fascination that drew you together in the first place. By reflecting on each other’s Mission Portraits and values, you will deepen your understanding and appreciation for one another. Relationships often begin with intrigue, that natural curiosity and excitement about what makes your future spouse unique. This session is about protecting that intrigue on purpose, so it keeps drawing you closer long after the wedding is behind you.

Scripture to Set the Tone

“And you have perseverance and have endured for My name’s sake, and have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Therefore, remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first.”

Revelation 2:3–5 (NASB)

Revelation 2 calls us to guard our first love for God, so it never quietly fades as life gets busier and more complicated. That same watchfulness, staying alert to what pulls you away, protects the relationship you are building, before you ever have a chance to drift.

How does your love for God shape the way you're learning to love your future spouse? How can humility and grace build the connection you're forming?

“Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss.”

2 Corinthians 13:11–13 (ESV)

What do these verses mean to you, and how do they apply to the relationship you're building together?

Key Concepts and Principles

The Relationship Triangle

Something amazing happens when God is at the top of the triangle and each of you is at a bottom corner. As you both pursue God and move closer to Him, you’re being drawn closer to each other, as His qualities are reflected in your relationship.

Pursue God together, and you're drawn toward each other.

The Three Steps of Discovery

  • Discover: notice, on purpose, what genuinely draws you to each other right now.
  • Cultivate: build habits, big and small, that keep that curiosity alive.
  • Protect: guard it against the busyness and drift that tend to come later, before they arrive.

Practical Steps

Explore the importance of intrigue. Relationships thrive when we maintain curiosity and appreciation for one another. Share with each other as you think back to the early days of your relationship — what made your future spouse stand out? How did their uniqueness captivate you?

God’s desire for first love. Just as God calls us to keep our first love for Him alive, He invites us to nurture that same wonder for your future spouse from the very beginning. As your love for God grows, it naturally deepens your connection with each other, building a healthier, more resilient relationship before it even starts. Apply the Three Steps of Discovery to your relationship with God.
